As Tropical Cyclone Alfred advances towards Australia’s eastern coast, major airlines including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia have proactively canceled numerous flights, leading to significant travel disruptions across the region.
Airline Responses:
- Qantas: The airline has suspended operations to and from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport and Lord Howe Island. Flights to Coffs Harbour are also canceled from midnight Wednesday. Services to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast remain under assessment.
- Jetstar: All flights to and from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport and Gold Coast Airport have been canceled until at least midnight Thursday due to strong winds.
- Virgin Australia: The airline has ceased operations to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport and Lord Howe Island, with further assessments ongoing for other affected regions.
Airport Closures:
- Gold Coast Airport: The terminal closed at 4 PM on Wednesday and will remain shut until further notice.
- Ballina Byron Gateway Airport: All flights have been canceled for Wednesday and Thursday, affecting 22 scheduled arrivals and departures.
- Coffs Harbour Airport: Flights are suspended from midnight Wednesday until at least midday Thursday.
- Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Airports: Both airports remain operational; however, travelers are advised to prepare for potential delays and cancellations as conditions evolve.

- Flight Status: Passengers are urged to regularly check their flight statuses through official airline channels or airport websites.
- Flexible Rebooking: Airlines are offering flexible rebooking options. Qantas and Virgin Australia allow customers to change flights within 14 days or cancel for a travel credit. Jetstar provides free date changes up to seven days before or after the original travel date or a voucher for untraveled flights.
- Safety Precautions: Authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to safety advisories, avoiding non-essential travel, and staying updated on local weather conditions as Cyclone Alfred approaches.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred, currently classified as a Category 2 system, is expected to make landfall between Maroochydore and Coolangatta early Friday, bringing destructive winds up to 155 km/h and heavy rainfall, leading to potential flash flooding and hazardous conditions.
